In this interview by Retama, he highlights that this regime has environmental and economic benefits by forcing to minimise pollutant impact in product design and providing a financial framework to treat micropollutants in wastewater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is crucial to maintain a fair balance of financial obligations to ensure its effectiveness and widespread acceptance, explains Eduardo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility in the water sector faces challenges. The current Directive only covers pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, even though many other products generate micropollutants. This creates discriminatory treatment as only some producers finance the removal of these pollutants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is suggested to extend liability to more products and a charging regime based on the producers’ contribution to sanitation and treatment services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
