Carlos Rueda discusses the challenges of transformation in the legal sector | Expansión

icon 31 March, 2026

Carlos Rueda, senior partner at Gómez-Acebo & Pombo, analyses the main challenges posed by transformation in the legal sector, in a context marked by accelerating technological change, increasing competition, and evolving client expectations.

In particular, he highlights the difficulties organisations face when undertaking transformation processes in periods of stability or growth. In this regard, he notes that “when things go well for several years, the difficult question arises: why transform?”, referring to the so-called “success syndrome”, which may hinder firms’ ability to anticipate future risks.

He also stresses the importance of embracing risk as a necessary element of evolution: “looking back and seeing that, in the past, risky decisions were made which today form the basis of a firm’s success helps partners understand that risk is necessary”.

Furthermore, he underlines the need to move towards a more open organisational culture that embraces learning and the management of mistakes. “We all make mistakes, but it is something we fear greatly”, he states, adding that “it is important to focus on giving younger professionals responsibilities and helping them understand that making mistakes is part of real life”.

In this context, Carlos Rueda concludes that transformation in the legal sector cannot be approached solely from a technological or process-driven perspective, but requires a deeper cultural shift to enable organisations to adapt sustainably to an ever-changing environment.
