Guillermo Guerra discusses the legal challenges driven by the booming defence sector | Expansión
The growth of the defence sector in Spain is driving the demand for specialised legal advice. Guillermo Guerra, partner at Gómez-Acebo & Pombo, analyses the main challenges and leads key transactions together with Indra.
The current geopolitical context, marked by growing international tension and increased defence spending, has transformed the sector into a focus of opportunities for law firms.
Gómez-Acebo & Pombo has established itself as a benchmark firm, accompanying major players in the sector such as Indra in some of the most important transactions in the market. Guillermo Guerra, who specialises in commercial law, highlights the boost this practice has experienced in recent years. Under his leadership, the firm has advised Indra on strategic acquisitions such as the purchase of 89.68% of Hispasat, the increase of its stake in Tess Defence or the acquisition of Deimos, reflecting the firm’s key role in strengthening the national defence industry.
Guerra underlines the legal complexity of the sector, where commercial interests, strict regulatory requirements and an absolute need for confidentiality and accuracy converge. “Balancing clients commercial interests with compliance with stringent regulatory requirements, such as export controls and foreign investment restrictions, is a significant challenge”, he says, pointing also to the growing importance of issues such as data protection, intellectual property and the use of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.
