Joaquim Caimoto Duarte

Joaquim is a counsel of Competition and European Union Law at Gómez-Acebo & Pombo Portugal.
With a professional background of over 20 years at the highest level, including being responsible for the national practice area of a leading European law firm, he has represented Portuguese and international clients from different sectors before the Portuguese Competition Authority (AdC), the European Commission (EC), the Spanish CNMC, the Court of Justice of the European Union and the National Court of Competition, Regulation and Supervision (TCRS) in Portugal.
Having extensive experience in all areas of competition law, he stands out for his coordination of nearly all major merger control processes in Portugal over the last decade, also for acting in various international cartel cases before the EC and the AdC, as well as for his involvement in other significant moments in the history of competition law in Portugal, such as the first case of abuse of dominant position by the AdC and the first Antitrust Class Action judged before the TCRS.
He holds a Law degree from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon. He was an intern at the European Commission and also holds a postgraduate diploma in European Studies from the European Institute of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon.
For the past 20 years, Joaquim has been ranked as a leading lawyer in his practice area by the main international law directories (such as Chambers Europe, Global Competition Review, Who’s Who Legal – including here as a thought leader – and Legal 500).
He was part of the winning team twice, in a previous firm, of one of the most prestigious international awards in his field of practice, the Regional Firm of the Year – Europe, awarded by Global Competition Review (GCR Awards), in 2014 and 2018.
