Almudena Arpón de Mendívil Aldama reflects on the crucial role lawyers play in society. | Forbes
The president of the International Bar Association (IBA) and partner of Gómez-Acebo & Pombo’s Corporate and Commercial practice emphasises that lawyers are an integral part of almost every aspect of people’s lives, often defending rights and freedoms and fostering understanding between various entities, including businesses and governments.
Despite this important contribution, Almudena points out that the work of lawyers is often invisible or undervalued, as their real impact lies in promoting understanding, dialogue and order to achieve common goals.
Arpón de Mendívil also stresses that the legal profession is essential for the proper functioning of justice, the application and interpretation of laws and the defence of human rights and democratic values. Through the IBA’s new report on the social and economic impact of the legal profession, she highlights data showing the profession’s contribution to economic growth, innovation, equality and public health. For example, a strong rule of law correlates with higher GDP, greater foreign investment and social inclusion.
In his view, the IBA’s work has helped to raise the visibility of these contributions, addressing misconceptions and promoting the broader value of the profession to society. She concludes by urging readers to reflect on the evolving role of lawyers in shaping a better future and society.
